The goal of weatherizing a house is to reduce the amount of energy a home uses, and to improve the safety and comfort of the people who live there. Weatherizing a home involves the installation of energy-efficient products like insulation, as well as weatherstripping doors and windows to stop drafts. It also includes sealing air leaks in ducts, walls and attics. A properly weatherized home can lower heating bills by up to 32%, not to mention help the environment by reducing the consumption of fossil fuels. To perform these jobs, Massachusetts needs contractors, construction trade workers, and laborers who are trained in weatherization skills. That’s where the MassGREEN Initiative can help.
Located at STCC, the MassGREEN Initiative, along with the state’s 15 community colleges, develops and delivers energy efficiency workforce training courses to meet the growing need for weatherization professionals. These courses provide basic to advanced weatherization skills training, as well as assist entrepreneurs who might be interested in starting their own weatherization contracting business.
